Break Ground on Your Business in Your Community

By Kim Thomas

If you want to start a small business, have you thought about the merits of basing it in your neighborhood? Your neighbors and community may be eager to buy your products or services and support your company. Learn how to get your entity up and running, and understand how small businesses benefit local communities, by taking a look at the following guide presented by Real Vegas Magazine.

Improve Your Business Skills

One of the best things you can do for yourself, your business and your community is to take your business and management skills to the next level. While enrolled in an MBA program, you can learn about strategy, business, leadership, management, self-assessment and self-awareness. Experts note one of the greatest advantages of distance learning MBA programs is the chance to work with experienced professionals, which may lead to networking opportunities.

Another great thing about elevating your entrepreneurial dreams while enrolled in an online master’s degree program is you may still work or take care of your family obligations while attending classes. As you check out degree options, focus on accredited institutions that offer competitive tuition rates.

Perform Market Research

Before choosing a name for your business or looking at potential locations, perform market research. This gives you the chance to gauge demand for the product or service you seek to offer. You may conduct your own research or rely on current sources. Navigating research on your own could give you the chance to interact with potential customers, but looking up current existing data may save you a lot of time and money.

Establish a Limited Liability Company

When the time comes to choose your business structure, consider establishing an LLC. Advantages of the structure include tax benefits, limited liability and less paperwork to fill out. If you’d rather not pay legal fees and instead put that money directly into your company, use a formation service. LLC formation regulations differ from state to state, so familiarize yourself with your zip code’s latest laws before getting too far into the process.

Understand the Benefits of Small Businesses for Local Communities

If you feel unsure about establishing your business in your neighborhood, do some research to see what you have to gain. For instance, you can create job opportunities in your backyard as a local business owner. Another advantage is your customers feed more money into the local community. You may like the idea of outsourcing to other local entities, which keeps the cycle going. The third benefit of small businesses for local communities is business owners become community representatives who help support the community’s identity.

Learn How To Engage With the Community

You could reap even greater benefits from starting your business in your backyard if you know how to engage with the local community. One great way is to participate in current local events, such as parades and festivals, which also helps to spread the word about your company. Another suggestion is to become a community board member, such as on a council for small businesses. Partnering with other local companies also keeps you connected with your community.

Have a Solid Plan

On your business plan, ensure you include a detailed description of your product, your marketing plan and your product’s value proposition. A business plan should also include the investment you need to get started and how much revenue you expect to earn.

While putting together your business plan, think about ways you can protect your business from cyber attacks. Believe it or not, small businesses are frequently the target of criminals due to their lack of IT security. So, think about what you need to protect your data — and your customers’ data — from hackers and cyber thieves. You may want to consult with IT security experts to put together a plan that makes sense for your business.

Opening your business right down the street could pay off more than you realize. Put these tips to good use to make your business dreams a local reality.
