Luis Marmolejo, also known as Lou Love and Lou the Barber is a really genuine man. He started cutting his own hair in high school and from there started cutting friends and family’s hair as well. He says, “well maybe I was not the best back then, but I did ok.” His Grandfather owned his own barber shop in Mexico before relocating to California, so Lou felt it was in his blood. After Lou graduated high school, he searched for a barber school in Las Vegas and found none. He didn’t want to go to cosmetology school, so he got into real estate. Fast forward to 2008, he was a real estate agent who had done very well for himself and he put all of his eggs into one basket which was 3 investment properties that he believed were going to bring him to financial freedom. As we all know in 2008 the housing market crashed, and it challenged Lou to reevaluate life and he realized that his heart was no longer in real estate anymore because of all that he lost. He took some time to do some serious soul searching which led him back to his dreams of becoming a barber. He started looking back into it and discovered that the 1st barber school in Las Vegas had opened in 2008. He went in for a tour of the school and with his last $10,000 to his name, he faithfully took a leap of faith and signed up to start barber school in January 2009. After 10 months of classes, he finished barber school in October of 2009. “The best investment I ever made was betting on myself! I’m not going to lie; it hasn’t been easy, and I was very lucky to have some great mentors that I was able to talk to through those hard days. In 2016, I finally felt comfortable and financially secure to open up my own shop after bouncing around to a few other great shops earlier in my career. It wasn’t easy in the beginning and I had questioned myself many times on why not just rent a booth and take care of my clients without all of the responsibility of owning my own shop, but now 4 years later, I wouldn’t change a thing. The Barber Lounge is my baby and has been my biggest achievement.”
Lou says he has many more aspirations he will pursue in this industry, so be sure to stay tuned for the moves he will assuredly make.
